PEDAL WITH EFFICIENCY
Cycling is a sport that can be enjoyed by both young and old, professional or amateur, or those just starting their fitness journey. For many, learning to ride a bike is something that happened when they were young children, and riding as an adult is simply the same thing, but with increased speed and volume. As cyclists become more serious about their performance, they look for ways to improve their power and speed. This will usually involve increasing the frequency and distance they ride. Initially, increasing the volume will correlate to increases in performance as their cardio-vasular and muscle strength improves. However, they will eventually reach a point of diminishing returns, and if over training occurs, it can actually have a negative impact on performance.
So, if training volume is no longer providing the improvements required, where can a rider go to get that extra increase in performance? The answer is that they need to look at improving their technique. A good technique enables cyclists to use their energy as efficiently as possible, in order to perform well. That means optimising their position on the bike and improving their pedal stroke, allowing them to produce maximum power.
This is where Pilates for Sports helps, as we strengthen a cyclists core, enable them to develop strong balanced muscles and teach them how to apply this core strength to their cycling, so they ride with:
- Maximum efficiency
- Optimal power output, and
- Reduced chance of injury
So why not take the Pilates For Sports challenge to "Be Your Best".

EFFICIENCY
A good technique enables cyclists to use their energy as efficiently as possible, in order to perform well. That means optimising their position on the bike and improving their pedal stroke, allowing them to produce maximum power. Pilates for Sports teaches cyclists to be aware of how they are currently cycling and then helps cyclists build a strong core to ensure that every bit of power they generate goes into their pedal stroke. This controlled efficient movement will also reduce the chance of injury.

STABILITY
To help you understand the benefits that a strong and stable core can provide to cyclists, picture a cannon on a canoe out in the middle of a lake. Now, if that cannon fires, it won’t be able to shoot very far because the canoe will wobble and capsize, as it can’t handle the force of the cannon. In this scenario the cyclists arms and legs are the cannon and their wobbly core is the canoe on a lake, which can't handle the power being produced because of its instability. However, put that cannon on a concrete platform and the result is very different. From that stable base, maximum power can be directed to the cannonball, resulting in the cannon being able to fire to it’s full potential. Just as a cyclist with a strong and stable core can transfer the maximum force generated to cycle fast.

BALANCE
Many of the performance and injury issues a cyclist experiences, arise from muscle imbalance. When we talk about a cyclist having a muscle imbalance, we mean that some muscles are overworking and other muscles are not doing their fair share of the work. The impact on cyclists is inefficient riding, reduced power output and an increased chance of injury. This is where Pilates can help. Pilates is a perfect way to cross train, as it moves the body in all of the directions it is designed to move, therefore restoring balance.

PEDAL STROKE
There are few things that are as important in cycling, as the pedal stroke. And while moving your legs around in circles, might seem like the most natural thing in the world. It actually takes a high-degree of body awareness, muscular strength and core stability, to have a smooth and efficient pedal stroke. Pilates For Sports develops the strength and body awareness to enable you to cycle with the most efficient pedal stroke possible.

REDUCED PAIN & INJURY
If your muscles around a joint are unbalanced and your core is weak, it means that some muscles will have to overwork to produce power. Over time this can lead to pain and even injury. Pilates For Sports will strengthen your core and help you to develop strong balanced muscles so that you ride efficiently with good form and with decreased chance of pain and injury.
INSTRUCTORS’ COMMENTS
“I have worked with cyclists from all levels - beginners to professional and have seen first hand the benefits Pilates For Sports can provide. Whether you want to develop more power to go faster or reduce your back pain, we customise the program to meet your goals. As Noel Jacobs says...
“Every time I ride now I'm conscious of relaxing my shoulders and using my glutes to produce power along with my the quads. I've always used the sliding the foot at the bottom of the stroke and pull up method but now it seems so much easier- almost as if my legs are gliding rather than working hard.
This program will deliver the core strength and balanced muscles you need, to "Be Your Best"
